Lutathera® Treatment
at Coastal Cancer Center
You Don’t Have to Leave Home for Advanced Cancer Care.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor (NET), you may have been told that the most advanced treatments require traveling hours to a major cancer center. With Coastal Cancer Center, that’s no longer the case.
We are the only cancer center in Horry County offering Lutathera® (lutetium Lu 177 dotatate) – an FDA-approved, targeted radiation therapy proven to help patients with certain neuroendocrine tumors live longer with a better quality of life. Right here. Close to home.
What Is Lutathera?
Lutathera is a type of treatment called Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy (PRRT). Unlike traditional radiation, which is delivered externally, Lutathera travels through your bloodstream and seeks out neuroendocrine tumor cells directly – delivering a targeted dose of radiation precisely where it’s needed, while largely sparing healthy tissue.
Lutathera is FDA-approved for adults with:
- Somatostatin receptor-positive gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs), including tumors of the pancreas, stomach, intestines, colon, and rectum
It represents one of the most significant advances in NET treatment in years, offering patients a therapy that works with the biology of their specific tumor type.
What to Expect During Treatment
- Initial consultation — Your oncologist will review your diagnosis, imaging, and medical history to determine if Lutathera is right for you.
- Pre-treatment preparation — You may receive amino acid infusions alongside Lutathera to help protect your Our team will walk you through exactly what to expect.
- Infusion visits — Each treatment session is given at our You can expect to be with us for several hours per visit.
- Ongoing monitoring — We’ll closely monitor your response to treatment with imaging and labs throughout your therapy.
How Does Lutathera Work?
Neuroendocrine tumors often have a large number of somatostatin receptors on their surface. Lutathera is designed to take advantage of this. Here’s how:
- Targets the tumor — Lutathera contains a peptide that binds specifically to somatostatin receptors found on NET cells.
- Delivers radiation directly — Once attached, it emits radiation that damages and destroys the tumor cells from within.
- Protects healthy tissue — Because the therapy is targeted, nearby healthy cells receive far less radiation than with conventional radiation therapy.
Treatment is given as an intravenous (IV) infusion, typically in four doses spaced approximately 8 weeks apart.

We accept referrals from oncologists, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, and primary care physicians across the Myrtle Beach area and beyond.
